Steps to Apply
Step 1: Submit Cal State Apply Application (Guide Provided Below)
Cal State Apply Guide (We will update the link when it is available. Please review before starting Cal State Apply application).
It is highly recommended to submit an application to 91³Ô¹Ï through before November 15 in order to be issued an 91³Ô¹Ï ID# in-time and needed to meet the deadline.
Applicants need to allow for a minimum of 5-10 business days for 91³Ô¹Ï to create and email you your 91³Ô¹Ï ID#.
-Please note that if you are not issued an 91³Ô¹Ï ID# you can still complete the MSW Application. In these situations, please enter nine zeros (000000000) as your 91³Ô¹Ï ID# in the MSW Application.
-Please also note that you will need both the CAS ID# and 91³Ô¹Ï ID# to submit your MSW Application.
A 10-digit Cal State Apply ID# (CAS ID#) will be sent to your email after submitting your Cal State Apply application.
*Do not submit your personal statement through Cal State Apply.
*Do not submit your work experience and resume through Cal State Apply
*If you are applying to other MSW programs, please check their requirements as their requirements may differ.
Step 2: Submit MSW Program Application
Submit an application to the School of Social Work through the MSW Program Application Portal (This link will be updated when admission begins). Submission deadline is TBD.
*You can start the application process once the portal opens, but both a CAS ID# and a 91³Ô¹Ï ID# are ultimately required to submit the application.
* Cal State Apply Portal opens TBD.
* MSW Program Portal opens TBD.
Applicants must provide complete information through the 91³Ô¹Ï MSW Application Portal including the following:
1. Contact, demographic, academic, and other background information.
2. Listing of social work-related experience
Paid employment or volunteer experience related to social welfare or human services, or in a position requiring skills relevant to work with underserved or marginalized populations, completed by the time of application. Please note that retail experience does not count as social work experience.
3. Current resume
Please include a current resume with your application. It should cover the following sections:
- Education: List all educational institutions you've attended, including dates of attendance, graduation dates, and any degrees awarded.
- Experience: Detail your work history, volunteer roles, and internships. For each entry, provide the employer or agency name, dates of employment, your key responsibilities, and the average hours you worked per week.
- Skills: Include any relevant skills or qualifications, such as language proficiency and your level of fluency, additional certification or training.
4. Recommendations Forms
You are required to submit three forms (letters) of recommendation through the MSW online application portal. Please choose individuals who can speak to your qualifications, and evaluate your ability to succeed in a graduate academic program and your suitability for the social work profession.
Your recommenders will submit their evaluations directly to your online application. When you apply, you'll provide their email addresses, and our system will send them an automated link to submit their recommendation form (letters are optional). All recommendations must be received by the deadline specified in the form. For this process, it is recommended to use your recommender's professional or corporate email address.
Choosing your recommenders: we strongly encourage you to seek recommendations from professionals who know you well, such as professors, managers, or supervisors. However, it's not a requirement that your recommenders come from these specific categories. Please note that recommendations from relatives and friends will not be considered.
Tips for a Smooth Process:
- Contact Your Recommenders Early: It's a good idea to contact your recommenders beforehand to confirm their availability and correct email address. Let them know they will receive an email from our application system asking them to submit their recommendation online.
- Keep Them Informed: Be sure to remind them of the application deadline so their submission is on time.
- Track Your Status: After you submit your application, you can check your Application Status page to see when your recommendations have been received and follow up with your recommenders if needed.
5. Personal statement
Write a personal statement that responds to the prompts provided below.
- Length: Your statement should be no more than 3,000 words. We recommend using a word counter to ensure you stay within the limit.
- Font and Spacing: Please use a standard, readable font like Times New Roman or Arial in 12-point size.
- Your statement should be double-spaced with 1-inch margins on all sides.
Your personal statement should address and answer the following questions:

Examples may include, but are not limited to, experiences of privilege and oppression based on race, class, gender, sexuality, ability and/or country of origin.
- What are your professional goals? In light of those goals, discuss what your contributions will be to society or the profession, especially in terms of our program’s mission emphasizing culturally competent (culturally sensitive) practice with Latinx, other minority groups, and those communities, groups, families, and individuals who are disenfranchised, oppressed, and/or marginalized?
- What are the strengths that you will bring to the program? Please also identify areas of growth that will enable you to become an effective social worker. Examples of strengths include, but are not limited to, communication skills, leadership abilities, personal characteristics, unique experiences, etc. Areas of growth include, but are not limited to, needing additional experience with certain populations, character development, maturity, ability to deal with crisis etc.
6. Writing sample
Please upload a sample of your best writing. We want to see a clear demonstration of your writing and analytical skills.
We don’t have a preference for certain types of submissions, but the most important factor is that you believe it represents your best work. We are aware that some applicants may not have access to their academic papers
Here is a list of preferred submissions.
- A paper written for an upper-division or graduate-level course that was graded by a professor.
- A professional report or publication that you wrote for work.

Who is eligible to write my recommendations?
For your application, we highly encourage that at least one letter of recommendation be provided by a current or former professor. This allows us to gain valuable insight into your academic performance, intellectual capabilities, and potential for success in graduate-level studies. While a letter from a professor is strongly encouraged, it is not a mandatory requirement.
Additional recommenders may include an employer, supervisor, or volunteer coordinator who can speak to your professional conduct, work ethic, leadership abilities, commitment to service, and relevant experiences within social justice or human services contexts. To maintain objectivity, we advise against submitting letters from family members, friends, or personal therapists. Please choose recommenders who can offer specific and detailed insights into your qualifications for the MSW program.
How do I know if my application was received?
Applicants should frequently check their 91³Ô¹Ï admissions status on-line through My91³Ô¹Ï to confirm if your 91³Ô¹Ï-level application has been processed or if materials are missing. The MSW Program will notify you of the status of your program application via our designated online system.
When will you notify applicants of admission decisions?
The MSW Program Admissions Committee will notify applicants as soon as possible after the admission decision has occurred. The usual notifications are from February to as late as July 1.
Can I transfer credits earned elsewhere to 91³Ô¹Ï?
Students who have taken CSWE accredited MSW-level courses at other universities (within the past 7 years) may request a transfer of a maximum of 12 units of credit. The process for unit transfer can only occur after an applicant is accepted into the program, and final decisions are made at the University level.
After I am accepted, can I switch between the on-campus and online programs?
Students admitted to either the On-Campus or Online/Hybrid programs cannot switch between the programs; they must enroll in the program to which they were admitted.
Am I eligible for licensure in other states upon graduation?
Students are advised to determine, prior to enrollment, whether the program meets licensure requirements in the State or Territory if the student decides to practice outside of California. Each state may have multiple requirements that must be met. Because licensure requirements are subject to change, all prospective licensees should visit the social work regulatory website of the states they plan to practice on a regulator basis.
