Engineering Advising Hold and Change of Major

Students are expected to consult with prospective department or success center for the major they are pursuing outside the College of Engineering. Completing the following steps prompts ESSC removal for the term.

You will need to repeat this process every semester until you have been admitted to the new major. At that point, you will no longer receive the major advising hold from the College of Engineering.

Step 1: Complete change of major advising protocol for the major you pursue applying

Some departments have an assigned faculty advisor, change of major workshop, drop-in services, or appointments through Spartan Connect with a success center advisor. Review the information related to change of major for the department you are pursuing for your next step.

Step 2: Email proof of advising to ESSC

Success centers or faculty advisors utilizing Spartan Connect will input an Appointment Summary of their discussion with you or your attendance to a workshop. Email success-engineering@sjsu.edu with your Student ID to confirm the completion of change of major advising and notify our center of your Appointment Summary being ready for review.

If Spartan Connect summary was not included as a part of your advising email success-engineering@sjsu.edu with the following information:

  • Student ID
  • The courses you need to take next semester to become eligible to apply to change your major
  • The Fall or Spring term in which you will apply to change your major

Hold removal is not automatic and requires manual verification of change of major advising completion. Allow 1 to 5 business days for hold removal. Omitting necessary information provided in Step 2 will cause delays in processing.
